Arae

Laser
2022

Arae is an immersive installation using a laser light source and a glass sphere where light refraction will paint all around the place. With a precise mapping of the glass sphere, the authors can generate different patterns where photons and material interfere to create some smooth patterns on the projection surface (which can be a dome, a planetarium, or even a cubic room which high celling - at least 6 meters).

Technical setup

The setup consists of an alluminium structure of 0.5x0.5 meters, adjustable up to 3 meters in height, with a plane for the laser projector and a transparent plexiglass plane for the glass sphere. The computer control & laser DAC can be put inside the structure with a black drapery to hide everything. Since it's using laser light source, the glass ball must be placed at least 2.5 meters from the roof (or 3 meters in some countries). The laser projector is below and reflections going down have been mesured and in the worst case (a single non-moving laser beam), the light going below horizontal is lower than a traditional light from a theatre. However we can follow the local legislation.
